This past Saturday, March 5, 2016, Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont invited the public to join us at the grand opening of our newest retail store: University Pointe.
Located at 5808 University Pointe Boulevard in Charlotte’s University City, the new store marks our twenty-third retail store in the region, which spans thirteen counties in North Carolina and five counties in South Carolina.
Michael Elder, President & CEO of Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont, and Darlene Heater, Executive Director of University City Partners, delivered remarks at the ribbon cutting. Doors to the new store opened at 9 a.m., and we were thrilled to see our supporters who came out for the celebration to be among the first to check out the new store.
Free breakfast and coffee were available for guests, and Lindsay from The Ace & TJ Show on local radio station Channel 96.1 joined us for the festivities. Guests registered to win prizes, including a 32″ flat screen television and laptop computer from our electronics store in University City, The GRID: Powered by Goodwill, and a $50 Visa gift card, while the first 100 guests received a free umbrella. Guests were encouraged to start their spring cleaning early and bring material donations to help us launch the new store.
The opening of the University Pointe retail store has created more than 30 new jobs in the community. During his remarks, Michael Elder spoke about what the new store means to Goodwill and the people seeking employment whom we serve.
“When someone is having a hard time finding a job because of lack of skills, experience or education, criminal backgrounds, and a host of other barriers to employment, Goodwill is there to help,” said Elder. “Thanks to the generosity of our community, proceeds from the sale of donations – like the ones you brought here today to help us launch this new store – fund job training and employment services free of charge for individuals facing barriers to employment, including the 12,000 job seekers we assisted last year thanks to your support.”
We encourage you to come visit the new University Pointe retail store for great deals on clothing, accessories, shoes, housewares, furniture, electronics, books and more. The store is open Monday – Saturday from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.
