This spring, we partnered with local professional organizing company Simplicity Organizers to encourage our community to donate unwanted items to Goodwill. Together with Simplicity Organizers, we created a list of 10 “life hacks” to make life at home easier when embarking on spring cleaning. If you haven’t started your spring cleaning yet, it’s never too late. Find a convenient Goodwill drop-off location near you and get started today.

1. Plan outfits in advance: Save time during busy weekday mornings and select outfits for the week on Sunday night. Hang items together in the closet with tags noting each assigned day to avoid stress while getting dressed.
2. Steam wrinkled clothes: Save time on ironing by tossing wrinkled clothes into the dryer with a wet cloth or towel. The wet material will emit steam to easily de-wrinkle your clothes.
3. Use hanging shoe holders for stuffed animals: Stuffed animals can easily pile up in children’s bedrooms and playrooms. Use over-the-door hanging shoe holders to ensure each stuffed animal has a home off the floor. This life hack is also good for bathroom items, wrapping stations and garage tools.
4. Create parking spots for children’s vehicles: Designate a section of the garage and create parking spaces for kids’ bicycles, scooters, wagons, etc. to keep them out of the way. Outline spaces with blue painter’s tape on the garage floor and your children will have their very own parking spot.
5. Wash backpacks and lunchboxes: Spring break is a great time to clean out your children’s backpacks and lunchboxes, which can be a breeding ground for mold and mildew. A quick wipe down and air dry will freshen things up until school is out this summer.
6. Simplify with all white socks for children: It takes unnecessary time when you have to match each and every colorful sock. White socks can always be matched to each other and are also easy to bleach.
7. Store linen sets inside pillowcases: Avoid misplaced and mismatched linens by storing each full set into one pillowcase to keep items together in the linen closet.
8. Purge mismatched sheets and pillowcases: Spring is the time to clean out the linen closet and donate items to Goodwill that no longer match each other or your style. Two sets of sheets in good condition per bed is all you need to maintain during the year.
9. Roll clothes in drawers and suitcases: Prevent creases and wrinkles on clothes by rolling lengthwise when stored in drawers and in suitcases when traveling. Plus, you can easily identify each item instead of having to dig through a stack of clothes.
10. Organize your closet by color: This not only helps when selecting your outfit, but it also helps you identify which colors you have in abundance and which you may be lacking.
