This past Saturday, July 23, Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont hosted a community open house event from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. with our partner, Power 98 FM of Beasley Media Group, to celebrate the opening of the new Goodwill Opportunity Campus in west Charlotte. We were thrilled to showcase our new campus with our friends in the community!
Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts joined us for the festivities, and delivered a proclamation declaring July 23 as “Breaking Barriers Day.”
“One of the challenges we know that Charlotte faces is that we don’t have opportunity open to everyone,” said Mayor Roberts. “With the opening of this Goodwill center today, we are that many steps closer to bringing opportunity to every single corner of our city…This is a fabulous facility, and it’s all about collaboration.”
Mayor Roberts, along with Goodwill team members, performed a ceremonial ribbon cutting for the new campus as Michael Elder, president & CEO at Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont, chanted “Opportunity Has a New Address!”
Goodwill was joined in the festivities by Dances of India and Guerilla Poets, sponsored by the Arts and Science Council Culture Blocks Initiative, as well as members of the Charlotte Hornets’ “Honey Bees” dance team and mascot Hugo the Hornet. Hip hop trio Migos performed several songs, in addition to artists TPC Tokyo and Akevius.
The Goodwill Opportunity Campus opened its doors to the community on Thursday, June 30. The new campus – featuring the 160,000 square foot Leon Levine Opportunity Center – brings together community partner agencies with a full-time on-site presence to provide wraparound services for our clients under one roof, including Charlotte Metro Credit Union, Charlotte Community Health Clinic – West, Common Wealth Charlotte and The Center for Community Transitions.
By addressing client barriers in healthcare, banking, financial literacy and transitional support services for individuals with criminal backgrounds, Goodwill and our on-site partner agencies are working together to help clients achieve stability and eventually gain a level of self-sufficiency to achieve family sustaining employment. The Goodwill Opportunity Campus also features Community Table Bistro, as well as our retail stores GW and Second Editions: A Goodwill Outlet Store.
Thank you to everyone who came out to our community open house. We hope to see you at the Goodwill Opportunity Campus again soon!
