You never forget your first impression of someone. When you meet people, you form opinions of them immediately. A first impression can play a huge role in how you view a person and his/her character.
It’s hard to let go of a first impression, and you don’t get a second chance. That is why it is so important to get it right the first time.
If you make a bad first impression on someone, you will have to work hard to prove yourself and change that person’s perception of you. Making a good first impression can be simple if you’re always prepared.
Look the part: You never know when or where you will meet someone, so make sure you look your best. Dress appropriately for the occasion. If you are on a job interview, show the employer that you are ready to work. Even if you’re interviewing for a job that requires a uniform, dress to impress.
The same rule applies everywhere else. Don’t wear bedroom slippers and sweatpants while you’re out! You could meet someone who is looking to hire a new employee. Most likely, you won’t be taken seriously if you’re dressed to lounge in your living room.
Be mindful of where you’re going and dress accordingly.
Be professional and respectful. No one wants to interact with someone who is rude and disrespectful. Watch what you do and say to people. Once you’ve had an unpleasant experience with someone because you were unprofessional or disrespectful, they will never forget it. Be the person that you would want to meet or work with.
This rule is important in the workforce. When you’re at your job you have to be considerate to co-workers. Get to work on time, have a positive attitude, listen and communicate effectively to be a good team player.
Remember to smile. Smiling is contagious. It makes you more approachable and inviting to others. Even if you’re not having a good day, or nervous about talking to someone, try your best to smile. It will make you feel better.
When you smile, you are welcoming others to get to know you. Think about how it makes you feel when you someone smiles at you. Now think about how great it will be to share that with someone else.
A smile is the best accessory you can wear, so use it!
