Today is America Recycles Day, the one day of the year dedicated to the promotion of recycling programs in the United States.
It’s something we put into practice every day at Goodwill, with your help–every time you donate materials, computers or clothing, or shop in our stores, you’re helping us keep millions of gently used items out of local landfills every year.
But how is donating a shirt or buying a set of dishes recycling?
Reduce. By donating your gently used items to Goodwill, you are reducing the amount of garbage that ends up in our landfills. Shoppers complete the cycle by purchasing these used items and extend their useful life.
Reuse. Donations are purchased and used by a shopper. It extends the life of an item, which reduces waste in industries like manufacturing and garbage disposal. Shoppers are able to reuse items and keep them in use longer, which means they stay out of our landfills.
Recycle. What if a shirt isn’t purchased or a stuffed animal taken home? Goodwill has a program for that too! We are able to sell some items for salvage, and those items are then recycled into new items or sent to other countries for processing or purchase.
How are you going to celebrate America Recycles Day?
