Donations to Charlotte–area stores fund high-quality career training programs offered free of charge by the nonprofit
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (January 26, 2022) – At Goodwill, our purpose is to help people see possibilities, seize opportunities and prosper. That’s why we offer quality career training and employment programs free of charge through Goodwill University, which offers a wide variety of courses specializing in IT, construction and customer service. Courses are designed to help people develop the skills they need to launch new careers, and pursue the life they want to achieve. The best part is Goodwill University courses are offered at no cost to participants, thanks to the community’s donations and purchases at 30+ local retail and donation locations.
Enrollment is open now for all courses – and anyone can participate! Note: The application deadline for the Spring session of our advanced IT courses is February 4.
If you’re new to Goodwill, complete our interest form (for the question that reads “How can Goodwill assist you today?” select the “Job Skills Training and Workshop” option) and someone from our team will reach out to you.
If you’ve already signed up with Goodwill in the past—welcome back! All you need to do is make an appointment.
IT Courses – IT Operations Training, Data Analyst Training & Java Training:
- Applications for all IT programs must be received by February 4.
- Each of these courses lasts 13 weeks and will run March 7 – June 3.
- Class meets virtually from 6 – 9 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for a total of nine hours each week.
- In order to apply, you must complete an assessment and go through a selection process.
- This course lasts one week and meets virtually Tuesday – Friday from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
- We’ll offer this course monthly in 2022 with upcoming classes starting February 8 and March 8.
- This one-day course is offered in-person both in Charlotte and Gastonia.
- We’ll offer this course monthly in 2022 with upcoming classes on February 8 and February 22.
- If you successfully complete the Forklift training course, you will receive a renewable NC General Industry Forklift certification (good for three years).
- This course lasts nine weeks and meets in person in the evenings on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6 – 9:30 p.m.
- We’ll offer this course several times in 2022: March 29 – May 26, June 7 – August 4, August 16 – October 13, and October 18 – December 22.
- After successfully completing the Construction Basics training course, you will receive a NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research) certification and the OSHA 10: Occupational Safety and Health Administration certification.
Commercial Carpentry Training:
- This course lasts 18 weeks and meets in person in the evenings on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6 – 9:30 p.m.
- We’ll offer this course twice in 2022: February 15 – June 30 and July 12 – December 8.
- In order to take this course, you must first complete Goodwill’s Construction Basics training course.
- This course lasts 10 weeks and meets in person in the evenings on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6 – 9:30 p.m.
- We’ll offer this course two more times in 2022: June 7 – August 11 and September 6 – November 10.
- If you successfully complete Goodwill’s HVAC training course, you will receive the NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research) certification for HVAC Level 1.
- In order to take this course, you must first complete Goodwill’s Construction Basics training course.
- This course lasts 10 weeks and meets in person in the evenings on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6 – 9:30 p.m.
- We’ll offer this course twice in 2022: March 22 – May 19 and September 6 – November 10.
- If you successfully complete Goodwill’s free Electrical training course, you will receive the NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research) certification for Electrical Level 1.
- In order to take this course, you must first complete Goodwill’s Construction Basics training course.
- This course lasts eight weeks and meets in person in the evenings on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6 – 9:30 p.m.
- We’ll offer this course three times in 2022: March 22 – May 12, May 24 – July 14, and August 2 – September 29.
- This course will prepare you for the FAA remote pilot knowledge Unmanned Aircraft – General test. Goodwill will pay the test fee.
- In order to take this course, you must first complete Goodwill’s Construction Basics training course.
Goodwill also offers other free training courses in Adult Basic Education, Computer Basics and Microsoft Office.
Participants in these programs not only receive high-quality training at no cost, but also partner with a career coach to help identify strengths and uncover pathways to personal and professional goals, and have the opportunity to work with the Goodwill Employer Engagement Team to connect with hiring employers.
