Success Story:
Jamel

“Goodwill came in at the perfect time. They helped me keep working while I was dealing with everything else. Without them, I would’ve been out of a job. They had the perfect job, perfect location, perfect pay. I knew I had to land it. It felt like it was meant for me.”

From Setback to Success: How Goodwill Helped Jamel Find his Path

When Jamel Smith found himself urgently needing work, he turned to the internet in search of opportunity. A determined Google search led him to a lifeline he didn’t know existed: GoodWork Staffing, the nonprofit staffing agency powered by Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont. What started as a hopeful click quickly became a turning point in his life.

“Goodwill came in at the perfect time,” Smith said. “They helped me keep working while I was dealing with everything else. Without them, I would’ve been out of a job.”

Smith connected with GoodWork Staffing through Goodwill’s Career and Employment Center, where he quickly found support, guidance and—most importantly—a job. That opportunity led him to Galvin Industries, where he was eventually hired full time.

But Smith’s journey didn’t stop there.

After a brief move out of state and the exciting news that he and his wife were expecting a child, Smith returned to Charlotte in urgent need of work. Once again, GoodWork Staffing was there.

“They had the perfect job, perfect location, perfect pay,” he said. “I knew I had to land it—it felt like it was meant for me.”

That job was with Mallard Creek Polymers, where Smith started as a latex operator. Thanks to his work ethic and drive, he was recently promoted to chemical partner—a role he works with great pride.

“I told them in the interview, ‘I don’t know anything about latex, but I’m a fast learner and a hard worker.’ They gave me a shot, and I proved myself.”

With the steady income and overtime opportunities, Smith was able to move his family into their first apartment—just two months into the job. And now, with a 1-year-old son and a stable career, he’s thriving.

“GoodWork Staffing helped me build a life. They checked in with me every week, encouraged me and made sure I was on track. That kind of support means everything.”

Smith’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when community resources like Goodwill exist.

He’s even referred friends to the program—one of whom also landed a full-time job through GoodWork Staffing after relocating to Charlotte.

For anyone looking for immediate work, Smith has this advice:

“Companies notice your effort. If you give it your all, you’ll get what you deserve—and more. And Goodwill is here to help you get there.”
