Virtual Information Sessions

We recently added three new virtual training programs in the construction and trade field: Construction Basics, Intro to Blueprint Reading and Estimating, and Intro to Electrical/HVAC (more information on those farther down this page). The Construction Basics course serves as the prerequisite for the other two advanced courses.

1. Creating a Workbook from Scratch

  • Course Description: In this workshop, you will learn how to create a new workbook. You will learn how to enter and delete content, how to modify columns and rows, how to drag and drop cells, and how to use the cut, copy and paste function.

    2. Formatting Your Workbook

    • Course Description: In this workshop, you will learn how to customize the look and feel of your workbook, allowing you to draw attention to specific sections and making your content easier to view and understand. You will also learn how to utilize the different number formats available in Excel.

    3. Understanding Formulas in Excel

    • Course Description: One of the most powerful features in Excel is the ability to calculate numerical information using formulas. Just like a calculator, Excel can add, subtract, multiply, and divide.

    4. Conditional Formatting 

    • Course Description: Conditional formatting provides another way to visualize data and make worksheets easier to understand. In this workshop, you will learn how to apply, modify, and delete conditional formatting rules in Excel.

    5. Understanding Functions in Excel

    • Course Description: In this workshop, you will learn the different parts of a function and utilize many common functions to find the sum, average, count, maximum value, and minimum value for a range of cells.

    6. Filtering and Sorting Data in Excel

    • Course Description: In this workshop, you will learn how to use filters to view only the information you need. You will also learn how to sort the data to better view and organize the data in your workbook.

          1. CUSTOMER, ADMINISTRATIVE & BUSINESS SERVICES TRAINING (CABS)

          • Course Description: In this free three-week course, participants build confidence and gain knowledge on job-search opportunities in customer service, call centers, administrative support and financial services. Facilitators will provide focused training on interviewing, networking and resume techniques to improve job preparedness and personal branding. This hands-on training will allow participants to practice basic computer skills, Microsoft Office and Google applications.

            2. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (IT)

            • Course Description: Official credentials for this eight-week online training program were designed by Microsoft Learning experts based on the requirements for high-demand industry career tracks. Participants can start the online learning at any time. Online learning must be completed within eight weeks after starting the program. We offer courses in the following areas:
              • Python: This online course is designed for someone new to programming, as many of the topics covered are basic programming topics which carry over well to other programming languages. Python is a very versatile programming language which can be used to power websites, build games and program hardware. Participants will learn data types and operators, decisions and loops, input and output, code documentation and structure, troubleshooting, and modules and tools.
              • Java: This online course is excellent for someone that wants to learn how to code in Java, a powerful object-oriented programming language. Java will help students improve employability prospects for any software development position requiring Java coding skills. Specifically, this course covers Java fundamentals, data types and variables, flow control, object-oriented principles, and compiling and debugging code.
              • JavaScript: This online course teaches valuable introductory JavaScript skills. Participants will learn JavaScript operators, keywords and methods, using variables, data types, and functions, implementing decisions and loops, interacting with the DOM (Document Object Model), and interacting with forms. In all of these topics, participants will understand how JavaScript is used to enhance existing webpages.
              • HTML & CSS: This online course teaches participants the foundational knowledge of web development. The course has two distinct parts: HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), which includes HTML fundamentals, document structuring and multimedia presentation, and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), which includes CSS fundamentals and styling webpages.

            3. CONSTRUCTION BASICS

            • Course Description: Goodwill’s free seven-week Construction Basics Training program assists individuals in quickly developing the knowledge and skills necessary to obtain a position in the construction industry. Training topics include construction math, blueprint reading, hand and power tool use, material handling, safety and more. The program is taught by National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certified instructors and is offered in partnership with Central Piedmont Community College. All training is free of charge for Goodwill clients.

            4. INTRO TO BLUEPRINT READING & ESTIMATING

            • Course Description: This seven-week program covers the fundamentals of reading and interpreting residential blueprints and estimating the quantities of materials and labor required to construct a house. This class adds to the skills learned in Construction Basics and Intro to Carpentry with training in reading plans and project management software. The program is taught by National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certified instructors and is offered in partnership with Central Piedmont Community College.

            5. INTRO TO ELECTRICAL/HVAC

            • Course Description: Goodwill’s free seven-week Electrical/HVAC program covers the basic fundamentals of environmental control systems used in the HVAC industry in addition to residential basic electrical wiring. This class introduces you to the care/usage of installation tools and materials and some National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements. Topics include safety, blueprint reading, planning and layout as well as installation of electrical distribution equipment. After you’ve successfully completed the course, you’ll be able to properly install conduits, wiring and electrical distribution equipment associated with basic electrical installations. The class is taught by National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certified instructors from  Central Piedmont Community College and provides a jumpstart for a promising HVAC or electrical career.

              6. Digital Charlotte

              • In an effort to continue to support the digital and media literacy skill development of the community, Digital Charlotte has launched open office hours via phone or Zoom meetings. Community members will have an opportunity to ask basic to intermediate computer and internet skills questions and receive support from a facilitator.
                • Open office hours will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. from Monday, April 27 – Monday, June 7.
                • Both English and Spanish speaking facilitators will be available for questions.
                • Community members do not need to sign up to participate.
