Virtual Information Sessions

We recently added three new virtual training programs in the construction and trade field: Construction Basics, Intro to Blueprint Reading and Estimating, and Intro to Electrical/HVAC (more information on those farther down this page). The Construction Basics course serves as the prerequisite for the other two advanced courses.

Microsoft Excel Workshops

1. Creating & Formatting a Workbook

  • Course Description: In this workshop, you will learn how to create a new workbook from scratch and how to customize the look and feel of your workbook, allowing you to draw attention to specific sections and making your content easier to view and understand.

    2. Filtering & Sorting Data in Excel

    • Course Description: In this workshop, you will learn how to use filters to view only the information you need. You will also learn about conditional formatting which provides another way to visualize data and make worksheets easier to understand.

      3. Formulas & Functions in Excel

      • Course Description:In this workshop, you will learn to use Excel, just like a calculator to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. You will also learn the different parts of a function and utilize many common functions to find the sum, average, count, maximum value, and minimum value for a range of cells.

          4. Creating Charts in Excel

          • Course Description: Charts allow you to illustrate your workbook data graphically. In this workshop, you will learn how to create and modify charts to visually represent the data collected in your workbook.

          1. Exploring the Ribbon

          • Course Description: In this two-hour workshop, you will learn how to interact with MS Word by exploring the different parts of the Word window, navigating the ribbon and using the start-up menu, allowing you to access common commands needed to create, modify, save and print documents.

          2. Working with Text & Page Formatting

          • Course Description: In this two-hour workshop, you will learn how to get a customized look and make your document pop by working with text properties and distribution, page formatting, adding page borders, colors, watermarks, and much more.

                4. ‘O*NET – Articulating Your Skill-Set’

                • Course Description: O*NET is a comprehensive web application that assists job seekers in exploring occupations, interests, skills matching, resume writing and much more. This workshop is designed to teach participants how to navigate through O*NET and find the best job based on interests, knowledge and skill set.

                      1. CUSTOMER, ADMINISTRATIVE & BUSINESS SERVICES TRAINING (CABS)

                      • Course Description: In this free three-week course, participants build confidence and gain knowledge on job-search opportunities in customer service, call centers, administrative support and financial services. Facilitators will provide focused training on interviewing, networking and resume techniques to improve job preparedness and personal branding. This hands-on training will allow participants to practice basic computer skills, Microsoft Office and Google applications.

                        3. CONSTRUCTION BASICS

                        • Course Description: Goodwill’s free seven-week Construction Basics Training program assists individuals in quickly developing the knowledge and skills necessary to obtain a position in the construction industry. Training topics include construction math, blueprint reading, hand and power tool use, material handling, safety and more. The program is taught by National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certified instructors and is offered in partnership with Central Piedmont Community College. All training is free of charge for Goodwill clients.

                        4. INTRO TO BLUEPRINT READING & ESTIMATING

                        • Course Description: This seven-week program covers the fundamentals of reading and interpreting residential blueprints and estimating the quantities of materials and labor required to construct a house. This class adds to the skills learned in Construction Basics and Intro to Carpentry with training in reading plans and project management software. The program is taught by National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certified instructors and is offered in partnership with Central Piedmont Community College.

                        5. INTRO TO ELECTRICAL/HVAC

                        • Course Description: Goodwill’s free seven-week Electrical/HVAC program covers the basic fundamentals of environmental control systems used in the HVAC industry in addition to residential basic electrical wiring. This class introduces you to the care/usage of installation tools and materials and some National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements. Topics include safety, blueprint reading, planning and layout as well as installation of electrical distribution equipment. After you’ve successfully completed the course, you’ll be able to properly install conduits, wiring and electrical distribution equipment associated with basic electrical installations. The class is taught by National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certified instructors from  Central Piedmont Community College and provides a jumpstart for a promising HVAC or electrical career.

                          • Read Charlotte has worked with community partners to curate this list of resources to help families keep learning alive at home for children from Pre-K-12th grade amid school closures due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

                          • Coursera collaborates with leading universities and companies to provide affordable, as well as free online courses to help people learn skills, get ready for a career, or earn a certificate or degree. 

                          6. Digital Charlotte

                          • In an effort to continue to support the digital and media literacy skill development of the community, Digital Charlotte has launched open office hours via phone or Zoom meetings. Community members will have an opportunity to ask basic to intermediate computer and internet skills questions and receive support from a facilitator.
                            • Open office hours will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. from Monday, April 27 – Monday, June 7.
                            • Both English and Spanish speaking facilitators will be available for questions.
                            • Community members do not need to sign up to participate.
                            • Participants may join and leave the Zoom meeting at any time during the two-hour window.
