Microsoft Office Specialist Training

Do you want to stand out from the crowd? Do you want to heighten your earning potential? If your answer is yes, then we have the course for you! Goodwill’s Microsoft Office Specialist Training course will teach you the fundamentals of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint – programs that many hiring managers want their applicants to understand. Upon successful completion of the course, students will take an exam to receive an industry-recognized certification that never expires. As you’ll see below, Goodwill will cover the cost of the certification exam.

  • Taking the Microsoft Office Specialist certification exam costs $1100, but it is offered for FREE for Goodwill clients who meet the requirements.

    Course length: Seven weeks

    Course timing: Class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. during the following time frames:

    How to register:
    To enroll in a training program, come to the Goodwill Opportunity Campus so that you can meet one-on-one with a specialist who can help you get started. You don’t need an appointment – simply show up whenever it’s convenient for you. The registration period for this course will open one month prior to the start date of each session.

    Computer & Employability Skills Training

    In today’s workplace, computer skills matter. Whether you want to learn the basics about online job searches or advance your knowledge about specific programs, there’s no better way to invest in yourself than by updating your technical computer skills with our free training classes. Attend one of Goodwill’s hands-on, instructor-led training classes will help make you more marketable to employers. All training is free of charge for Goodwill clients.

    Goodwill’s computer lab at the Goodwill Opportunity Campus is open to job seekers Monday through Wednesday from 8:30-11:30 a.m., with staff available to answer questions and provide one-on-one assistance. 

    CHARLOTTE COURSES:

    COMPUTER BASICS

    This course teaches participants how to properly use a computer and about its parts. Participants will be fully engaged with hands-on training in performing basic computer tasks, navigating the computer, mouse manipulation, keyboarding and working with the desktop, taskbar and more.

    When: Every other Monday, 9 AM – 4 PM

    Prerequisite: None.

    OFFICE SUITE – WORD BASICS

    This course will cover how to create, save, modify and print a document; correct spelling errors; create a bulleted and numbered list; change page margins; add emphasis to words; copy and move text; align paragraphs and more.

    When: Once a month on Monday from 9 AM – 4 PM

    Prerequisite: Successful completion of Computer Basics course or pass assessment.

    OFFICE SUITE – WORD INTERMEDIATE

    This course will cover how to insert and modify headers, footers, hyperlinks, page numbers, columns, tables, shapes and images, and how to use table tools and dialogue box launchers.

    When: Once a month on Wednesday from 9 AM – 4 PM

    Prerequisite: Successful completion of Office Suite – Word Basics course or pass assessment.

    OFFICE SUITE – WORD ADVANCED

    This course is designed for participants who have met the prerequisite and have used Microsoft Word before. There will be more focus on utilizing the insert tab, design tab, table tools and dialogue box launchers. Participants will build upon the skills learned in Office Suite – Word Intermediate by creating, designing and modifying a multiple-page document.

    When: Once a month on Thursday from 9 AM – 4 PM

    Prerequisite: Successful completion of Office Suite – Word Intermediate course.

    OFFICE SUITE – EXCEL AND POWERPOINT I

    Participants will learn how to create worksheets and workbooks, move or copy a worksheet, format worksheets, modify page setup and create hyperlinks. Participants will also have an introduction to PowerPoint, and learn how to create a presentation and how to insert and format slides.

    When: Once a month on Monday from 9 AM – 4 PM

    Prerequisite: Successful completion of Office Suite – Word Advanced course or pass assessment.

    OFFICE SUITE – EXCEL AND POWERPOINT II

    Participants will learn how to import data, customize options and views, print and use AutoFill. Participants will also learn how to order and group slides, and print presentations using PowerPoint.

    When: Once a month on Wednesday from 9 AM – 4 PM

    Prerequisite: Successful completion of Office Suite – Excel and PowerPoint I course.

    OFFICE SUITE – EXCEL AND POWERPOINT III

    Participants will learn about number formats, formatting cells, filtering and sorting records, common functions and chart layouts. Participants will also learn about formatting text, shapes, images and applying transitions in PowerPoint.

    When: Once a month on Thursday from 9 AM – 4 PM

    Prerequisite: Successful completion of Office Suite – Excel and PowerPoint II course.

    INTERVIEW SKILLS

    This course is designed to help participants feel more confident during the interview process. Participants will learn about the different stages of the interview process, types and styles of interviews, helpful hints, how to address common interview questions, the STAR method and more.

    When: Every other Thursday, 9 AM – 12 PM

    Prerequisite: None.

    GASTON COUNTY COURSES:

    The following classes are offered at our Gastonia Job Connection

    RESUME WORKSHOP

    This workshop covers the skills needed to create a professional resume, cover letter and search for a job online. This workshop is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 – 4:30 p.m.

    MICROSOFT WORD TRAINING

    You will learn how to create your first Word document and how to type where you want to on a page, fix spelling errors, make a list, change page margins, add emphasis to words, and save and print your work.

    MICROSOFT EXCEL TRAINING

    You will learn how to create your first Excel workbook and about cell basics, modifying columns, rows and cells, formatting cells, printing workbooks and freezing or locking panes.

    COMPUTER BASICS

    This program teaches you about parts of a computer and the proper way to use a computer. You will be fully engaged with hands-on training in performing basic computer tasks, navigating the computer, using a mouse, keyboarding, working with the desktop, taskbar and more.
