Guest Post: Who’s your mummy?

What do a storm trooper and a white bed sheet have in common? Both will be integral to my 8-year-old son’s Halloween costume of choice this year: Mummy.

I love to create outfits with my children, using a few strategic store-bought pieces and filling out the rest of the look with homespun creativity and ingenuity. I won’t lie — part of that DIY-ness stems from my refusal to spend $40+ per child on outfits that will be worn and tossed aside after one wear.

So of course, I look to Goodwill to help me fill out the gaps on each costume. This year, it couldn’t have been more simple — I needed a flat white bed sheet to distress and tear into bandages for the mummy look. I found a queen-sized sheet at the very first store I visited on my Halloween quest: the Concord Goodwill store, which tends to have exactly what I need when I need it. I plan to anchor the bandages to last year’s storm trooper outfit.

Last year, I ordered a plain white T-shirt and pants from Dharma Trading and sewed (who am I kidding? I ended up using boatloads of no-sew tape in the wee hours of Oct. 30 since I am a master procrastinator) black and blue felt panels on to duplicate the storm troopers’ body armor.

So for $2.99 and a little labor, I should have a  frightfully good mummy costume. The clock is ticking on completion of the costume. I better get busy!
