Goodwill® & IKEA Charlotte Partner on “Furniture Take Back” Donation Drive

“Furniture Take Back” Event at IKEA Charlotte

Saturday, June 11 & Sunday, June 12

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (June 1, 2016) – What do you do with your old furniture when you are planning to buy new furniture? IKEA Charlotte and Goodwill® Industries of the Southern Piedmont are hoping you’ll bring it to them. The Charlotte furniture and home furnishings retailer is a pilot store for IKEA USA in a unique “furniture take back” program in partnership with Goodwill.

Here’s how it works: bring your used furniture to IKEA Charlotte, 8300 IKEA Blvd, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 11 or Sunday, June 12, and Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont will be there at those times on those days to take suitable furniture back to their Charlotte metro region retail stores for resale. In addition to helping the environment and Goodwill, you’ll receive a coupon from IKEA for $20 off a purchase of $150 or more.

“IKEA’s vision is to create a better everyday life for the many people, and with that in mind, one of our objectives is to be leaders in offering sustainable solutions for the home, being actively involved in the community while reducing our impact on the environment,” said IKEA Charlotte spokesman Camilo Aviles. “Furniture that can’t be reused by Goodwill will be recycled in a responsible manner, preventing this material from ending up in a landfill. We want as many people as possible to take advantage of this opportunity. The bigger the donations, the greater the positive impact on our environment.”

IKEA Charlotte, which opened in 2009, already has built a lengthy record of partnering with local charities, including Hope Haven, Crisis Assistance Ministry, Carolina Refugee Resettlement, and United Way of Central Carolinas.

Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont, whose mission is “Changing Lives Through the Power of Work!” also operates more than 20 retail store locations in the Charlotte metro area.

If the program is successful, it could then be implemented at some or all of IKEA USA’s 37 other stores in partnership with other Goodwill Industries operations in those locations, the same way a nationwide IKEA partnership has been implemented with the American Red Cross. As a part of the IKEA – American Red Cross partnership, IKEA stores around the country donate needed items to their local Red Cross partners’ Disaster Responder Programs.
