The most successful redecorating projects include something unexpected. It could be an abstract painting in a rustic cabin, a Louis XIV settee in a mid-century modern living room, or a simple DIY project that repurposes something old and outdated into a stunning focal point.
That’s why I love antique and vintage furniture. Sometimes I find a piece that isn’t in perfect condition. You know the old saying, “Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater”? If I can salvage part of a junky piece of furniture, I do. I store it away until I find the perfect opportunity to fix it up.
When a client recently asked for unique ideas for her daughter’s bedroom, I immediately remembered an antique dresser mirror I had tucked away in my garage. The dresser was discarded years ago, but I couldn’t part with the mirror.
A triptych-style mirror was revealed after I cleaned years of dust from the carved frame. I thought the feminine shape would be adorable as a headboard in a little girl’s room.
I primed the wood before painting for an even application. It took several coats of pale pink paint in an eggshell finish to transform the frame. To ensure safety, I securely attached the new headboard directly to the wall. I finished the room with bedding to match. This little princess is sure to have sweet dreams every night.
