Goodwill offers two free six-week Construction Skills Training programs to assist individuals in quickly developing basic knowledge and skills necessary to obtain entry-level position or better in the construction industry. The students are taught by National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certified instructors and are offered in partnership with Central Piedmont Community CollegeAll training is free of charge for Goodwill clients.

Entry Level I Construction Training

The Entry Level I Construction Training provides training in the areas of construction math, blueprint reading, hand and power tool use along with safety training. All students receive OSHA-10 safety cards and employability skills training such as resume development, interview techniques, communication skills and work ethics. All training is free of charge for Goodwill clients.

This course offering is also a prerequisite for the Level II Construction Training. Upon successful completion of this course the student will have a 10 hour OSHA card. The student will have a better understanding of the construction industry and its potential hazards. They will also be able to safely use common hand and power tools and identify the proper tool needed for specific jobs. They will be able to enter the construction industry at an entry level position.

Course Length: 96 hours

Pre-requisites:

  • Personal interview at Job Resource Center
  • TABE testing in the Job Resource Center at the Goodwill Opportunity Campus
  • Goodwill orientation
  • CPCC registration

Certificates Received Upon Completion:

  • NCCER: National Center for Construction Education and Research
  • OSHA 10: Occupational Safety and Health Administration
  • CFO: Certified Forklift Operator License
  • CRC: Career Readiness Certification

Intermediate Level II Construction Training

The Intermediate Level II Construction Training provides training in the areas of drywall repair, doors and hardware, locks, windows and floors. This course uses the NCCER training format and provides certificates of competency in basic construction knowledge. Students will have the opportunity to work in a paid internship while taking the course. All training is free of charge for Goodwill clients.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will:

  • Possess a better understanding of installation process and some specific construction trades.
  • Have acquired hands-on application of their knowledge.
  • Be prepared to enter into a specific construction trade area at an entry level position with work experience through internship opportunity.

Prerequisites:

  • TABE score 6D or 9th grade reading
  • One of the following courses:
    • CIX 7020: Entry Level Construction Training
    • WOL 110: Wheels of Learning
    • CIX 7000: Introduction to Carpentry
