If your local Goodwill store is like mine, there is usually an abundance of old ginger jar lamp bases that look similar to the ones pictured here:

Seriously. They are most likely disguised by a coat of dust and sometimes a sad shade of country blue.
I found this one for the attractive price of $3 and thought the short round shape would make a great little desk lamp. I had some leftover green paint from another project and decided it was just the color to bring this lamp up to date. For a smooth finish, I used a sponge brush to apply two coats. I added a black, streamlined shade that I found for $7 at a consignment store.
When shopping for lamps, my best advice is to ignore the color and look for a pretty shape or a base with unique detail. While I used a sponge brush for this project, I normally spray paint my lamps. It’s the quickest and easiest way to change the overall look. Be sure to tape off the cord to avoid paint splatter.
And, while modern lampshades may not be in abundance at Goodwill, lots of discount home decor stores now carry them. You may also consider using shades you already have and updating them with fabric or even a ribbon trim. I recently did another lamp makeover project for our dining room, using a pair of old lamps and new shades.
